What is a Worm Egg Count?

A worm egg count is a microscopic examination of a faecal sample in which the various worm eggs are identified and counted. The result is an estimation of the number of eggs per gram (epg) of faeces and this leads to an estimation of the degree of infestation of the animal or group.
Do you need to worm your hens?
Is your current method of worming working?
...A worm egg count could answer these questions

 Worms
Worms are one of the biggest threats to livestock and poultry. So easily picked up, yet so debilitating if not treated. For many years now we have recommended worming hens, ducks and geese on a regular basis to make sure they are always in the clear.
Now, the advice is changing. There are sheep farmers in Scotland that can no longer farm sheep. Why, because the resistance to worming medication is building up, it’s growing at such a rapid rate that ‘Animal Health Advisors’ (SQP) and Vets are changing the advice given out to customers. The new advice is ‘only worm when you need to’.  This will stop the resistance to worming drugs growing and we will continue to have efficacy in the drugs when we need to use them
How do we know we need to treat? – easy ‘Faecal Worm Egg Count’
For years people have looked at Happy Chicks and commented on our dream jobs! Well these dream jobs have just got a little messy. We now have a ‘Feacal Worm egg count’ department. Which means, we inspect poo! We only need a small sample to run the test. For poultry you would remove some poo from the below the perches in the morning and for all of livestock and pets you would choose a sample that you have seen been produced (so it hasn’t been on the ground to long!) Pop your sample in a small container and bring it to us, or order our collection kit on line and post it back
After a huge investment we now have the tools and equipment to count the faecal eggs in your poultry or livestock poo, thus giving you an accurate count.
You may not need to worm your poultry, or it may be your worming programme might not be effective. Either way a Faecal Worm Egg Count can give you the answer.
