Ex Battery Hens

We use a different system to most. In most cases you join a list ready for the clearing of a battery building. The suppliers dont have the buildings available to store them, and think people wont pay the extra pence it costs to feed them for a few weeks until they come along. It seems a shame to us, not being in farming all our lives, to let these hens die for such a small difference in feeding, watering and housing them for a few weeks, espescially when we have buildings available here anyway, and we have found most people feel the same way.

So we rescue enough to supply people here until the next batch is due to go from a local battery farm. Like all battery farms they tend to have a company come and dispose of thousands per visit at certain times of the year, paying a nominal fee because they use the meat in animal products, but clearing the buildings quickly and efficiently.

We go in just before this company and buy as many as we think we can re-home.

We have been doing this since moving here, just at certain times of the year, and are hoping we can now rescue loads more because of all the fantastic media attention recently.

These hens need a little extra TLC than normal hens for the first few weeks, but the rewards are great. We’ve raised lots of ex battery hens over the last 3 years just for fun, and our first hens are still going strong!

We also supply drinkers, feeders, starters books, powders, feeds and all the other bits you need to get started.

Just wanted to say a quick thank you for my girls. Settled in, had a surprise egg there in the box laid on the way home. No real problems with bickering, the delightful Bambi (named by my daughter who thinks her spots make her look like a deer) took top spot straight away. The are being spoilt rotten and now start talking to us as soon as we step out the door. Thanks again

I just thought I'd send you a quick email to say thank you for the four lovely ladies you delivered to warrington last wed, they appear to have settled in very well, all be it with a bit of bickering. Actually had our first egg this morning!! Was very surprised we got one so soon, and a lovely one it was too :)

Hi Sarah, Just a quick message to say Thank-you for helping us select the ex-battery girls we collected today, they are settling in wonderfully already! There was only a bit of argy-bargy with our hybrid girls, and they are all now harmoniously snuggled up in the henhouse. They came straight out the box and got on with eating, drinking and having a good scratch and nosey around their new home!

I got 3 lovely ladies from happychicks last summer. I have to say as other before me have, that they were in much better condition than I expected when they arrived. They settled in quickly and soon became very friendly girls. It was my first time keeping hens so was a steep learning curve, but Sarah was there with helpful advice at the end of the phone of email whenever needed. I did feel like I was being a pain on occasions, but it was never too much trouble for the happychicks gang. Thank you sooooo much for all hour help, and I can't wait to take delivery of 4 more ladies tomorrow.
